A fare hike is coming for GO Transit riders after Metrolinx’s board voted unanimously to pass the increase on Thursday.
The transit authority said the fare hikes would go into effect on Feb. 1, 2014.
Adult single tickets are increasing by five to seven per cent and adult Presto tickets are rising by three to five per cent on average.
The cost of an adult fare will rise between 35 and 55 cents, depending on the length of the ride.
For example, a train trip from Union to Georgetown will go up from $9.45 to $10 for an adult single ticket, while an adult Presto fare will increase from $8.62 to $9.
Below is an example of what the GO fare increase would now look like:
In its report, Metrolinx highlighted its train and bus service, and major construction projects over the summer and fall.
Around 60 per cent of GO’s 63 stations underwent construction, while parking facilities at the Ajax and Erindale stations were opened on Aug. 19 and Sept. 3, respectively. GO also plans to add 4,500 new parking spaces to the entire station network by the end of 2013.
GO also cited its 30-minute train service on the Lakeshore East and West lines, which started in late June.
In November, GO announced it’s making its quiet zone a permanent feature on all rush-hour trains during the work week. The transit authority introduced the quiet zone as a pilot on the Barrie GO line in July.
