Police warn of Jays, Raptors ticket scams

Toronto police are warning the public about ticket scams surrounding the upcoming Blue Jays home opener and Raptors playoff games.

“Many fraudulent ticket schemes begin with ads, posted online, offering tickets for sale,” police said in a release Wednesday.

“The buyer contacts the person offering the tickets for sale and, upon settling on a price, the buyer is encouraged to send money electronically so the tickets can be sent. The buyer sends money, but the tickets never arrive.”

Police also warn that counterfeit tickets are often sold outside the venue and there’s little recourse for those who purchase them.

The Jays home opener is scheduled for Friday, and the Raptors are heading to the playoffs for the first time in six years.

Excitement surrounding both teams is building and police are encouraging sports fans to be wary of tickets for sale at unusually low prices and to always purchase tickets through an authorized seller.

“Anyone purchasing tickets from a secondary source should be guided by the saying, ‘Let the buyer beware,'” police said.
