There’s a lot of confusion about sugar so we’ve compiled your 10 must-know facts about the sweet stuff.
1) Sugar contains four calories per gram.
2) There are about four grams of sugar in a teaspoon.
3) There are also several types that are considered “sugar,” such as glucose-fructose, fructose, lactose, honey, molasses and corn syrup.
4) Sugar increases the risk of obesity, which is linked to serious illnesses such as diabetes, heart disease and cancer.
5) Health Canada is proposing that all types of sugars be labelled under a “Sugars” heading on ingredient labels.
6) Brown sugar isn’t better for you than white.
