York police was “disappointed” to learn people still aren’t getting the message about impaired driving in our city.
York Regional Police released numbers today showing that 13 people were arrested for driving under the influence over the Easter long weekend. The arrests were made between 11 p.m. on Thursday, March 24, and 1:40 a.m. on Easter Monday, March 28.
“Impaired driving is the number one criminal cause of death in Canada,” the release reads. “When you drink or use drugs and drive, you not only risk your life and those of your passengers, but the lives of every other driver and pedestrian on the road.”
Ironically, this report comes out on the same day that sentencing was announced in the Marco Muzzo case, a very high-profile impaired driving case in that region.
He has been sentenced to ten years in prison and has been prohibited from driving for ten years as well.

Muzzo, 29, has pleaded guilty to six counts of impaired driving that led to the deaths of four people on September 27, 2015.
Daniel Neville-Lake, 9, his 5-year-old brother Harrison and 2-year-old sister Milly were all killed in the crash along with their 65-year-old grandfather, Gary Neville. The two other counts of impaired driving account for the children’s grandmother and great-grandmother, who were seriously injured in the crash as well.
Muzzo’s blood level was two to three times the legal blood alcohol concentration in Ontario.
