York police lay 153 charges in two-week distracted driving blitz

York regional police have laid more than 150 charges in a two-week distracted driving enforcement blitz.
The campaign ran from April 1-15 and focused on busy intersections throughout the region.
A total of 153 charges were laid for unlawfully using a hand-held device while driving.
Fines for distracted driving in Ontario range from $400 to $1,000.

Heftier fines for distracted driving and rules to help protect cyclists and students went into effect last year, as part of the province’s new rules of the road.
The Making Ontario Roads Safer Act, which was approved unanimously in June, cracks down on distracted driving, including hiking fines and increasing demerit point penalties.
According to the Ministry of Transportation, a driver who uses a cellphone is four times more likely to be in a crash.
