The OPP is commending a 64-year-old pilot’s quick thinking after he landing a plane that was experiencing mechanical failure mid-flight.
Police received a call about a yellow-and-black plane landing in a field along Highway 3 near Cayuga, Ontario, on Saturday afternoon. The plane appeared to display serious damage as a result of the landing.
Following their investigation, OPP discovered a 64-year-old male pilot from Haldimand County, Ontario, and a 61-year-old female passenger from Newington, England, experienced engine issues after their 1942 Westland Lysander single-engine plane departed from Hamilton Airport.
The man was able to safely land the aircraft in a field, resulting in damage to the plane but no injuries for both parties.
“Due to the quick thinking actions of this experienced pilot, he was able to safely land the aircraft in a field without causing any serious injuries to himself or his passenger.” said Constable Ed Sanchuk of Haldimand County.
The National Transportation Safety Board was contacted and advised.
