The QEW between Oakville and Burlington is now home to Canada’s first high-occupancy toll (HOT) lanes.
The lanes opened on Thursday.
What had been high-occupancy vehicle (HOV) lanes between Trafalgar Road in Oakville and Guelph Line in Burlington are now HOT lanes, which require a permit.
Queen’s Park stressed that vehicles with two or more people in them can still travel in the HOT lanes for free, and no existing lanes were removed to make way for the HOT lanes.
There are a limited number of HOT permits. The Ontario government said 3,400 people applied for 500 spots.
The permit lasts for three months and costs $180.
The term will be valid from Sept. 15 to Dec. 31, allowing drivers to have an extra two weeks to use the HOT lanes only for the first term.
Permit applications and renewals for the next term, Jan. 1 to March 31, 2017, open on Nov. 1, 2016, and can be submitted at Ontario.ca/HOTLanes.
