City seeks public input on possible changes to holiday shopping bylaw

By News Staff

Is Toronto’s holiday shopping bylaw antiquated?

Currently, the bylaw requires most grocery stores to close on public holidays while restaurants are allowed to stay open.

But grocers argue their business models have changed over the years, and many now offer prepared meals similar to restaurants.

The city is pondering changes to the bylaw, but wants to hear from residents first.

A public consultation will be held on Tuesday from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the North York Memorial Community Hall.

City staff will weigh the results on the consultations and report their findings at a Licensing and Standards Committee meeting on Oct. 20.
