8-year-old boys injured after roofing material leaks from school ceiling

Two 8-year-old boys were injured when roofing material dripped through the ceiling during their third grade gym class.

Police initially responded to a call for an industrial accident around 1 p.m. at Derrydown Public School on Monday.

Toronto District School Board spokesman Ryan Bird tells CityNews roofing repairs were taking place at the school. Liquid roofing material leaked through the ceiling and into the gym.

Police initially reported the liquid was tar, but Bird said he believes it was liquid asphalt.

A minimal amount of liquid fell on one boy’s neck. A slightly greater amount fell on the other boy’s arm.

Paramedics say both boys were taken to hospital with minor burns.

Bird says work at the school has stopped and TDSB staff will be dispatched to determine the circumstances surrounding the incident.
