The COVID-19 death toll continues to climb in Ontario, with 28 more deaths reported in Thursday’s daily provincial update.
A total of 3,443 people have now died from COVID-19 in the province. The majority (2,189) were people living in long-term care.
Ontario reported 1,210 new cases of the novel coronavirus Thursday — a drop from the 1,417 cases confirmed on Wednesday.
The most new cases are in Peel Region (361), Toronto (346) and York Region (143).
The province says it conducted over 41,800 tests in the previous day, inching closer to its goal of 50,000 tests per day.
On Wednesday, Premier Doug Ford said the rising COVID-19 numbers are “extremely concerning” and warned that virus hotspots Toronto, Peel and York regions could see added restrictions. An announcement is expected Friday.
The province also announced Wednesday that there would be no extended winter holiday for Ontario students, saying outbreaks at schools have been contained and more time away from school isn’t necessary.
In a troubling update Thursday, Critical Care Ontario said Ontario has hit the 150 Intensive Care Unit bed threshold, meaning the possible cancellation of some surgeries.
