A 47-year-old man is facing an attempted murder charge after reportedly ramming into a police car, and allegedly approaching an officer with a knife.

Police say the incident happened at Ellesmere Road and Gander Drive just before 8 a.m. Saturday morning.

Police Chief James Ramer said an officer was stopped at an intersection when a vehicle intentionally hit the cruiser from behind twice. The driver then exited the vehicle, allegedly holding a knife. Other officers arrived at the scene and were able to de-escalate the situation.

One officer was taken to hospital.

Paramedics say they transported two people to hospital with minor injuries, but would not confirm if one of them was the police officer.

Police said Lamont Hunter, 47, of Toronto is facing several charges including attempt murder, dangerous operation of a motor vehicle, two counts of assault of a peace officer with a weapon, weapons dangerous and fail to comply with release order.

He is scheduled to appear in court on Sunday.
