Toronto police temporarily closing buildings to public due to COVID-19 Omicron variant

Ontario turns to booster shots and new capacity limits to slow the spread of the omicron variant. Adrian Ghobrial has when adults can sign up to get their third shots, and when to expect a dramatic scaling-back of capacity in public spaces.

The Toronto Police Service has announced all of its stations and buildings will be temporarily closed to the public, citing concerns about the COVID-19 Omicron variant.

According to a statement issued Thursday afternoon, the closure order comes into effect on Friday at 7 a.m. The facilities will be closed “until further notice.”

For those who need to contact officers, they can call the non-emergency line at 416-808-2222 or their local division. Reporting emergencies through 911 won’t be affected by the move.

Despite the order, there will be limited exceptions for entry. For those who need to provide fingerprints or attend for emergency vulnerable sector screening, they will be able to attend subject to COVID-19 screening.

When it comes to reporting property damage or theft under $5,000, parking- and traffic-related issues, and graffiti, that can be done through the service’s website.

Criminal record checks will need to be online.

The announcement came hours after Ontario’s COVID-19 Science Advisory Table called for stronger public health measures, reduced contacts, and an enhanced rollout of booster vaccine doses.
