S&P/TSX composite down in late-morning trading, U.S. stock markets mixed

TORONTO — Canada’s main stock was lower in late-morning trading, weighed down by losses in the base metal and telecommunications sectors, while U.S. stock markets were mixed.

The S&P/TSX composite index was down 28.29 points at 20,899.92.

In New York, the Dow Jones industrial average was down 54.30 points at 33,125.84. The S&P 500 index was down 4.71 points at 4,155.97, while the Nasdaq composite was up 49.46 points at 12,224.69.

The Canadian dollar traded for 79.84 cents US compared with 79.65 cents US on Tuesday.

The July crude contract was up US$1.18 at US$120.59 per barrel and the July natural gas contract was up 33 cents at US$9.62 per mmBTU.

The August gold contract was up US$8.70 at US$1,860.80 an ounce and the July copper contract was down less than a penny at US$4.43 a pound.
