Toronto Raptors sign Otto Porter Jr. to 2-year deal with player option

The Toronto Raptors stayed busy on the second day of free agency, agreeing to a two-year contract with veteran forward Otto Porter Jr.

The second-year is a player option, according to Chris Haynes of Yahoo Sports, who was the first to report the signing. Sportsnet’s Michael Grange has since confirmed the contract.

Porter Jr., whose wife is from Toronto, is coming off his first NBA Championship with the Golden State Warriors.

Still only 29 years old, Porter Jr. has played nine seasons in the league, establishing himself as a solid “three and d” type forward with the ability to knock down three-pointers and defend at multiple positions consistently. He’s also listed at 6-foot-8, joining a Raptors organization that values positional versatility at that height.

After signing a one-year deal with Golden State, Porter Jr. played a vital role with the Warriors last season, appearing in 63 games (15 starts) while averaging 8.2 points-per-game, 5.7 rebounds-per-game, and 1.5 assists per game.

He also hit .370 per cent of his threes and finished with an 80 per cent mark from the free-throw line.

Porter Jr. also comes with pedigree after being selected third overall by the Washington Wizards in the 2013 NBA Draft, quickly establishing himself as a reliable young talent on a contending Wizards team that rostered John Wall and Bradley Beal.

He then signed a lucrative four-year, $106.7 million contract in 2017 before being traded to the Chicago Bulls in 2019. It’s in Chicago where Porter Jr. played alongside current Raptors forward Thaddeus Young, whose new contract was made official by Toronto on Friday.

The Raptors will be Porter’s fifth team in the last six NBA seasons.

This is the third signing by President Masai Ujiri and General Manager Bobby Webster, who resigned Canadian forward Chris Boucher on a three-year deal on Thursday.
