Man charged with impaired driving after pedestrian fatally struck

A man has died and seven people have been sent to hospital after the driver of a Jeep allegedly drove through a red light and struck two vehicles. Alex Bloomfield reports.

A 26-year-old man has died and seven others were sent to hospital after a multi-vehicle crash downtown on Friday night.

Toronto police say a 2022 Honda CRV and a 2020 Toyota Corolla were northbound on University Avenue when the driver of a 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee allegedly drove through a red light westbound on Wellington Street West and collided into the two vehicles around 11:40 p.m.

Two pedestrians were hit, including a man who died at the scene. Family members who arrived at the scene of the fatal crash on Saturday for an impromptu memorial identified him as Gregory Girgis.

Police say a 32-year-old man was taken to hospital with severe injuries. The occupants of the Honda and Toyota were also taken to hospital with minor injuries.

Police say 26-year-old Nitan Thakur of Toronto was arrested and faces charges of impaired operation causing death, impaired operation causing bodily harm, over 80 operation causing death and bodily harm, dangerous driving causing death and bodily harm.

He was scheduled to appear in court on Saturday, July 2.

Police are now asking anyone in the area who has dashcam footage or security cameras to contact them or Crime Stoppers.

This is the 25th fatal collision in Toronto this year.
