Longtime Toronto Councillor Minnan-Wong not seeking re-election in 2022

Longtime Ward 16 Councillor Denzil Minnan-Wong announced on Wednesday he will not seek municipal re-election in 2022.

Minnan-Wong represents Don Valley East in Toronto and previously Ward 34. A deputy mayor, Minnan-Wong was first elected in 1994.

“While a difficult decision in many ways, I believe it is time for me to move on to the next stage of my life,” Minnan-Wong said in a statement.

“Through eight elections in 28 years, I never forgot who elected me — the people of Ward 34, which became Ward 16 in 2018. Always my inspiration, I knew they wanted responsible government. A council that respected their tax dollars and worked to provide quality municipal services.”

Minnan-Wong was one of the councillors behind the decision to honour longtime Toronto Raptors guard Kyle Lowry with a street name in the city and the formation of Don Mills Crossing in North York — a 60-acre site.

Going forward, Minnan-Wong said he hopes that city council will “pay attention to key emerging issues” and invest financially in Toronto roads.

“Our parks need more attention. Graffiti is out of hand. Rooming houses and transitional housing projects should not be allowed into residential neighbourhoods without proper, thorough, and authentic consultation,” the councillor said.

The Ward 16 councillor thanked his family, friends, and Mayor John Tory.

“To my council colleagues, I wish you every success in leading our city in what looks like some challenging times ahead,” Minnan-Wong concluded.

“It has been an honour to serve the residents of Toronto with you. So good luck… and go easy on the bike lanes.”
