A man is under arrest after stealing a police vehicle on Yonge Street and leading officers on a chase that ended in a crash in North York.

Toronto police tell CityNews officers were responding to a break-and-enter at a business on Yonge Street, just north of Lawrence Avenue, around 4:20 a.m. on Monday

During the police response, a suspect jumped into a police dog services SUV and drove off with two canines in the back of the vehicle.

A police chase ensued and ended in a crash at Lawrence and Keele Street, where the stolen SUV struck a sign post, a tree, and a light standard.

Police say the male suspect exited the wrecked SUV after the collision and tried to get into a number of other vehicles in the area.

Officers arrived at the scene shortly after and arrested the suspect. He was taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Paramedics say a second person was also sent to hospital as a result of the crash. The dogs inside the stolen vehicle were unharmed in the collision.

Lawrence Avenue is closed in both directions from Benton Road to Keele for the investigation. The Road closure is expected to last several hours.
