2 dead after crash involving vehicle travelling wrong way on Highway 401 in Toronto: OPP

Two people have died after a head-on crash Sunday morning involving a vehicle travelling the wrong way on Highway 401 in Toronto, Ontario Provincial Police officers say.
According to an update posted on an OPP Twitter account several hours after the crash, the incident happened at around 5:30 a.m. in the eastbound lanes of the highway near Bayview Avenue.
Sgt. Kerry Schmidt said officers received reports of a black vehicle going westbound on the eastbound lanes.
He said that vehicle, driven by a 35-year-old Mississauga woman, crashed into an eastbound vehicle driven by a 53-year-old Angus man.
Schmidt said both drivers died at the scene.

Schmidt said collision reconstruction investigators were on the scene gathering evidence to help figure out what happened.
“We’re looking into all aspects. I don’t know if weather played a part or what the circumstances were that led this vehicle to be travelling westbound in the eastbound,” he said.
“This is an absolutely tragic situation. The investigation is ongoing and will continue. We are in the process of notifying family as well of this horrific news.”
UPDATE: Expect to have all lanes reopened by 1pm.
