Marner’s point streak ends at 23 games as Maple Leafs fall to Rangers

By Lucas Casaletto

Mitch Marner’s point streak ended at 23 games as the Toronto Maple Leafs lost 3-1 to the New York Rangers on Thursday.

Toronto lost in regulation for the first time since Nov. 11. It went 12-0-3 in its previous 15 games. The Maple Leafs also had recorded a point in nine straight road games, including seven wins.

Rangers winger and former Maple Leaf Jimmy Vesey scored two goals. Goalie Igor Shesterkin made 22 saves in the victory.

Michael Bunting scored the lone goal for Toronto.

Toronto was coming off three home wins — a 7-0 thrashing of Anaheim on Tuesday after victories over Calgary and Los Angeles.

On Saturday, the Leafs will visit Washington for a date against Alex Ovechkin and the Capitals.

Ovechkin scored his 800th career goal this week, becoming just the third player in NHL history to accomplish the feat. Ovechkin is just two goals from passing Gordie Howe for second on the career list.

“Mr. Hockey” is the only player between Ovechkin and Wayne Gretzky’s record of 894 that long seemed unapproachable. The longtime Capitals captain remains very much on track to challenge the “Great One.”
