A glimpse of the trains that will operate on Toronto’s Ontario Line

By Lucas Casaletto

We now have an idea of what the trains that will run through Toronto’s anticipated Ontario Line will look like.

GFG Rail revealed photos of a new fleet of driverless subway trains that will run up to every 90 seconds through Toronto. The company says the trains can move up to 30,000 people per hour in each direction, with the design idea of a contemporary vehicle “projected towards the future.”

The PC government unveiled the almost 16-kilometre, 15-stop Ontario Line in 2019, expanding on the city’s initial Relief Line proposal. When completed, the Line will connect with 40 other transit routes, including GO train lines, TTC subway and streetcar stops, and a new east-west light rail line currently being built.

GFG Rail says the vehicle will be recognized and appreciated, which will see it integrated into the urban context of Toronto.

“For decades, governments of every stripe have been talking about the need for new subways in the GTA,” Premier Doug Ford said at the time. “They’ve been studying it forever. There’s been endless reports, endless committees, but finally, we’re the government that got it done.”

Metrolinx has pegged the project’s total cost at almost $11 billion, and it’s projected to be operational by 2030. As part of the government’s 30-year, $82 billion plan for expanded public transit and highways across the GTA and Golden Horseshoe, it was revealed that the Ontario Line would eventually connect to Toronto Pearson.

A few weeks after Metrolinx removed several centuries-old trees at Osgoode Hall, they announced the intention to cut several thousand trees down in the Don Valley to make way for the northern section of the Ontario Line.

The agency plans to plant an average of three trees for every tree removed during the construction and is working with the City of Toronto and the Toronto Region Conservation Authority.
