Ontario driver charged for using licence-plate concealing technology

A Porsche driver in Ontario was pulled over and charged after police discovered they were using a licence-plate concealing device.

Responding officers for the Halton Regional Police Service in Milton pulled a driver over on Sunday evening after it appeared the licence plate was covered.

“Investigation revealed that the driver had a licence plate concealing device,” the police unit tweeted. “The driver was charged.”

A police spokesperson said the licence plate covering technology was being operated through a button from the driver’s seat.

Licence plate covers are illegal in Ontario but frequently pop up across the Greater Toronto Area (GTA).

“Every number plate shall be kept free from dirt and obstruction and shall be affixed so that the entire number plate, including the numbers, is plainly visible at all times, and the view of the number plate shall not be obscured or obstructed by spare tires, bumper bars, any part of the vehicle, any attachments to the vehicle or the load carried,” according to Ontario’s Highway Traffic Act.

Drivers most often use them to prevent red light and speed cameras from accurately reading a licence plate.
