Toronto police have arrested and charged the suspect who allegedly followed two people into an elevator at Yorkdale Mall and stabbed one of them multiple times.

The suspect, identified as George McLean, 48, of Toronto, was arrested and charged with aggravated assault, two counts of assault with a weapon, four counts of uttering death threats, three counts of sexual assault, possession of a weapon, uttering threats of property damage, and five counts of failure to comply with a release order.

The stabbing happened at around 10 p.m. on Wednesday.

Police say a man and woman were walking to an elevator in the mall when McLean approached them and followed them onto the elevator.

Once on the elevator investigators say a verbal and physical altercation ensued and McLean pulled out a knife and tried to stab the woman.

Her friend intervened and McLean stabbed him multiple times. He was taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries and McLean fled the mall in a black 2012 Honda CRV before officers arrived.

McLean is scheduled to appear in court at Toronto Regional Bail Centre on June 30.
