Arrest made in $600,000 healthcare benefits scam that spanned 22 months

Peel Regional Police have made an arrest in what authorities call an extensive healthcare benefits scam that saw a loss of over $600,000.

Authorities said the alleged fraud was carried out over 22 months, beginning in February 2020. Investigators took one person into custody on September 6, 2023.

Police said the victim, a healthcare benefits provider, paid out several benefit claims to numerous employees of a large online retailer.

Investigators claim some employees worked with the suspect to submit fraudulent claims. Once spread out by the healthcare benefits provider, the illegal funds would be shared between the individual plan member and the suspect.

The accused was identified as 30-year-old Anand Pareshkumar Amin of Vaughan. He’s been charged with fraud of over $5,000.

Police said he was released with conditions and will appear in court on September 25, 2023.
