Leafs goalie Matt Murray has hip surgery, out 6-8 months

Toronto Maple Leafs goaltender Matt Murray recently had successful bilateral hip surgery, the team announced Monday.

The Maple Leafs added that his recovery will take six to eight months.

General manager Brad Treliving ruled out Murray for the season in a press conference at the start of training camp, saying the goaltender needed significant surgery.

“We’re not necessarily focused on time frames right now,” Treliving said at the time. “This is months not days or weeks.”

Murray, 29, is entering the final season of his contract with the Maple Leafs but had fallen down the depth chart after missing time with abductor, ankle and head injuries in 2022-23.

He had a 14-8-2 record with a .903 save percentage in 26 starts last season. He was acquired from the Ottawa Senators along with a third-round draft pick in 2023 and a seventh-round draft pick in 2024 for future considerations.

The Senators also retained 25 per cent of Murray’s salary for the remainder of the contract.

Toronto is expected to begin the new season with goalies Ilya Samsonov and Joseph Woll. Veteran goalie Martin Jones, who was signed to a one-year, $875,000 contract in August, was placed on waivers on Sunday.
