Long-time Toronto Maple Leafs defenceman Jake Muzzin has joined the organization as a pro scout, general manager Brad Treliving announced on Monday.
Muzzin, 34, has dealt with a number of injuries, including multiple concussions and a spine injury suffered during the 2022-23 campaign. He played only four games and was ruled out for the remainder of the season, as well as the upcoming 2023-24 season.
The Maple Leafs acquired Muzzin in early 2019 from the Los Angeles Kings for Sean Durzi, Carl Grundstrom and a first-round pick in the 2019 draft. He signed a four-year, $22.5 million contract extension with the Maple Leafs in February 2020.

Treliving also announced that former Leafs goalie Curtis McElhinney was hired as the Director of Goaltending Development and Scouting.
The 40-year-old suited up in 249 regular season NHL games split between the Tampa Bay Lightning, Carolina Hurricanes, the Maple Leafs, Columbus Blue Jackets, Phoenix Coyotes, Ottawa Senators, Anaheim Ducks and Calgary Flames, captured two Stanley Cups with Tampa Bay (2020 and 2021).
The London, Ont. native played two seasons with the Leafs (2016-17 and 2017-18).
Treliving announced that former NHL winger Chris Bourque will work as a college free-agent scout with the organization.
