Four male teenagers were arrested and face charges in a series of home invasions and attempted robberies in Brampton.
Peel Regional Police said on October 10, four suspects forced entry into a home near Williams Parkway and Creditview Road.
It’s alleged that the suspects encountered the homeowner while inside the residence and demanded the car keys for a vehicle parked in the driveway.
Police said the four suspects sprayed an unknown substance at the victim and stole the homeowner’s vehicle from the driveway. The victim sustained minor physical injuries.
The same suspects attended a different Brampton residence on October 12 and broke into the home.
Police said they encountered the homeowner and made demands for the keys to the vehicle in the driveway. They were unsuccessful in their robbery attempt and fled to a vehicle, which police later determined had been stolen.
Investigators tracked down the suspects in the Brandon Gate Drive and Keenan Crescent area in Mississauga. The suspects were taken into custody, and property related to both home invasions, including a metal pipe and two canisters of capsaicin-based spray, were seized.
Capsaicin is an active component of chilli peppers.
Police arrested three 17-year-old males and a 16-year-old. Each teenager faces two counts of robbery, two counts of wearing a disguise and possession of stolen property. The four youths were held on bail.
The accused were not identified as a result of the province’s Youth Criminal Justice Act.
A police spokesperson said due to the rising incidents of violence related to auto crimes across the GTA, local police forces have established a Provincial Carjacking Joint Task Force.
On Monday, Ontario Provincial Police announced its officers have joined with its GTA counterparts to create a provincial task force to address a rise in carjackings. The task force is set to be co-led by the OPP and Toronto police, who say the level of violence used in vehicle thefts represents a “new and evolving threat.”
