Number of subway issues on Line 1 lead to hellish Monday morning for commuters

Monday morning commuters saw rush-hour chaos across the TTC’s Yonge-University line. Rhianne Campbell reports, the multiple disruptions caused delays for more than 75 minutes.

Commuters endured a hellish Monday morning as the TTC dealt with numerous service disruptions and delays on Line 1.

Two separate closures took place at around 8 a.m. in the heart of the morning rush.

Mechanical problems halted subway service between Vaughan and St. George stations, and between St. George and Finch.

About an hour later, the TTC announced that subway service was also suspended between St. Clair and Sheppard-Yonge to deal with a trespasser on the tracks.

Shuttle buses were summoned for all three stoppages, but huge crowds could be seen at stations, with people flooding onto the streets in the rain seeking alternatives.

That prompted Toronto Police to issue a warning about crowd control, urging the public to use caution at overwhelmed Bloor, Union, St. Clair and York Mills stations.

Subway service eventually resumed, but the TTC noted delays due to the deluge of backed-up, frustrated riders.

The miserable Monday even led one Toronto city councillor to criticize the TTC for how it handled things.

“Some subway delays are sadly unavoidable,” wrote Coun. Josh Matlow on X. “But when they’re not managed well, big crowds are left out in the cold, running late for school or work, and without the updates they need.”

Matlow added that he intended to bring a motion to the next TTC board meeting to better support impacted riders.

Some of those riders took to social media to share their experiences.
