MFC 28 has lost one of its two championship fights.
The MFC announced Sunday that lightweight title-holder Antonio McKee, who was set to make his return to the organization after a one-fight stint in the UFC, will be unable to defend his title Friday in Edmonton because of a knee injury.
Drew Fickett, McKee’s scheduled opponent for the co-main event, will maintain his spot on the card in a showdown against replacement Matt Veach (15-2). The Fickett-Veach encounter will be a three-round bout contested at a catchweight of 160 pounds.
“I’m disappointed not to be facing McKee for the title but it’s only a matter of time until I get my hands on the MFC lightweight belt,” Fickett said.
Veach has won four straight fights and holds seven career victories via submission. This will be a return to the Maximum Fighting Championship for the 29-year-old who previously captured a decision win over MattMacGrath at MFC 16 in May 2008.
MFC 28: Supremacy, which will be held at the River Cree Resort and Casino outside Edmonton, is headlined by a matchup of local Canadians Ryan Jimmo and Dwayne Lewis for the vacant light-heavyweight belt.
NOTES: Tito Ortiz has been forced to pull out of an upcoming main event matchup at UFC Fight Night 24 against Antonio Rogerio Nogueira after suffering an injury that required 22 stitches. He will be replaced by Phil Davis, who was originally slated to fight at UFC 129 in Toronto, for the event March 26 in Seattle.
