Sentencing hearing for man who torched cruiser during G20

A 41-year-old man who pleaded guilty to lighting a police cruiser on fire during the G20 summit in Toronto had a sentencing hearing on Monday.

Nicademo Catanaci’s lawyer said he was high on cocaine and depressed when he lit a newspaper on fire and tossed it inside an abandoned police vehicle near Queen and Spadina on June 26, 2010.

A victim impact statement by police chief Bill Blair was read during Monday’s hearing.  Blair said Catanaci’s actions put numerous lives at risk and hurt Toronto’s reputation.

Catanaci, who lives at home with his parents in Windsor, has a lengthy criminal record – with 17 previous convictions.

“My understanding is that the defence and the Crown Attorney are far apart on (length of) sentence, but the Crown is asking for upwards of two years in prison,” said Det. Sgt. Gary Giroux.

Catanaci will be sentenced on March 16th.
