A terrible tragedy has unfolded at a GTA public school.
Details are sketchy about what happened, but an eight-year-old child was pronounced dead after being found at John McCrae P.S. in the Major Mackenzie and McCowan area.
The youngster was discovered in the stairwell of the school in the afternoon during gym class, and immediately rushed off to Markham-Stouffville Hospital, where he was pronounced dead around 4pm.
He was apparently running up and down the staircase as part of gym class, but had grown tired and started to walk with some other students at the time he suddenly collapsed.
A gym teacher was supervising the class when the incident occurred and both the instructor and paramedics tried to revive him. But they couldn’t.
“We were just like exercising on the stairs,” a female classmate named Pooja recalls.
“I just went upstairs. I just saw him lying on the ground. And then he just started banging his head on the ground. And that’s when everything happened.
“My teacher just told us to go to a different class and we just stayed there,” she added.
There’s no immediate word on the cause and the investigation is ongoing. The boy’s name won’t be released until all his family members have been notified.
