Technical glitches delay auction of 1893 Levi’s jeans

There are vintage jeans. And then there are jeans from the American Wild West that are up for auction.

A Maine auction house is putting up for bid a bona fide pair of Levi’s blue jeans bought in 1893.

Daniel Buck Auctions & Appraisals says the jeans were ordered for Solomon Warner, who participated in the creation of the Arizona Territory. According to a description on the auction website, Warner never wore the jeans. The jeans ended up in a trunk and became “the only known pair of unworn 19th C. Levis in existence.”

Warner was a big fella. The cotton jeans with a waist cinching buckle on the back of the waist band, button fly and suspender buttons feature a size 44 waist and 36-inch inseam.

The 123-year-old pants were set to go on the auction block Saturday in Lisbon Falls, Maine, but technical glitches prevented that, according to the auction house. The company says they will be sold in the coming days.

When the jeans are sold they and are expected to bring in tens of thousands of dollars due to their pristine condition. An estimate on the website pegged their value at between $60,000 and $80,000.
