It might not be the same as cheering in the stands with a beer in hand at the Air Canada Centre – but for Maple Leafs fans it could be the next best thing.
Starting next week, 25 Cineplex theatres across the province will be running Leafs games on their movie screens in high definition and with full theatre sound. It’s the first time the Blue and White have been shown on the big screen, and tickets will cost about the same as a regular movie ($8.95 to $10.95).
The first game, which will also be shown on the team-owned digital channel Leafs TV, is next Thursday against the Florida Panthers.
“Watching Darcy Tucker deliver a body check or Mats Sundin score a goal on a 50 foot movie screen in High-Definition gives fans the feeling they are inches from the ice. We’re excited to work with Cineplex Entertainment to provide Leafs fans an extension of a great sports experience in a theatre environment,” said Chris Hebb, Senior Vice-President of Broadcast for Leafs TV, in a statement.
There are six Toronto theatres and six in the 905 region participating – see below for a list – and Cineplex is reportedly hoping they’ll be at least half full.
It’s not the first time an NHL team has paired up with the theatre company to screen games – Cineplex showed 33 games in Vancouver, Calgary and Edmonton last season, and planned to add more this season. Ottawa is also now on board with five Senators games.
And though fans won’t be able to drink beer in the cinemas, there will be other attractions to going – including appearances by Leafs alumni including Wendel Clark and Darryl Sittler, trivia contests, and draws for prizes.
