Who was Colves “Jack” Meggoe, the man who was gunned down in cold blood in his Neilson and Finch home late Tuesday night?
The answer depends a lot on who you ask. His neighbours on Horseley Hill Drive recall him as a kind, considerate Good Samaritan who was always trying to help his community.
But a police source tells CityNews the man some knew as “Jacko” was allegedly a drug dealer and that the home where he met his untimely end was well known to authorities as a place supposedly used for illegal purposes.
Publicly, they’ll only say they were “c oncerned” about the activity inside the residence.
Friends and family contend that’s not the man they knew. Meggoe was shot in the stomach and was rushed to hospital. But doctors couldn’t save him.
Those who knew the 50-year-old couldn’t contain their grief when they discovered their friend had been killed.
“Who did this? Who did this?” one woman screamed, her cries piercing the night air as she learned the news.
“What do you mean he is dead?” demanded another, as he tried to comprehend the tragedy.
“Jacko” owned a garage in the city, lived with his two brothers and took in street kids.
“The kids in the summertime with the ice cream truck, he was buying them everything, you know. He was just a great friendly guy,” sighs saddened neighbour Mark Hamilton.
“He helped everybody, everybody,” adds another.
They’re all angry about police whispers that something untoward was going on in the Horseley Hill house.
“You know a drug house, right? And police know about it, right? I f you run a drug house, wouldn’t the cops raid it and stop it?” demands Courtney Meggoe, the victim’s distraught brother.
“He had nothing to do with the drugs,” insists a friend.
A police dog was brought in to try and sniff out the murder weapon, but it’s not clear if anything was found.
But Courtney Meggoe appears to have an ominous warning about his search for justice.
“The bible says an eye for an eye,” he concludes.
A makeshift memorial has sprung up around the crime scene, as police continue to hunt for at least two suspects. The motive for the slaying isn’t clear, but police say it appears the gunmen knew who they were looking for.
Detectives are appealing for more witnesses to come forward in the case. Anyone with information should call Toronto Police at 416-808-7400 or Crime Stoppers at 416-222-TIPS (8477).
