An infant girl may have permanent brain damage from the abuse she allegedly suffered at the hands of her parents when she was just weeks old.
Durham Regional Police arrested an Oshawa couple this week in connection to the disturbing case.
The child was brought in to Lakeridge Health in Oshawa last March when she was just five-weeks-old and was immediately transferred to the Hospital for Sick Children when doctors discovered the extent of her injuries, which included several broken bones, numerous bruises, bleeding on the brain and a fractured skull, authorities contend.
When detectives, hospital staff and child care workers determined the injuries were no accident the baby was placed in foster care and an investigation ensued.
The child’s 19-year-old mother and 21-year-old father were arrested Monday at their Oshawa home. The pair is facing a slew of charges, including assault causing bodily harm, negligence and failure to provide the necessities of life.
Their names aren’t being released to protect the identity of the child who police say has recovered from her numerous physical injuries, but may have suffered permanent brain damage.
Investigators are still appealing for anyone with information on this case to step forward. If you can help, call Durham Police’s Child Abuse Unit at (905) 579-1520 ext. 5317 or 1-888-579-1520, or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS.
