Apple Unveils Newer, Cheaper TV Box, Updated iPods

Apple managed to revolutionize how we consume music and now it’s attempting to do the same with films and television shows.

On Wednesday the company unveiled the latest version of Apple TV – a small box that sits atop your television and allows users to watch content, such as shows and movies, rented from iTunes. While the device can’t record television, it does show content streamed by WiFi from other gadgets like iPads, iPhones and others enabled with iTunes.

So, if you start watching a program on a portable device and decide to slump into the couch and continue viewing on a bigger screen after a few clicks.

Users can rent, not buy, some HD TV shows for 99 cents (US) and first-run HD movies for $4.99 (US) with Apple TV. The second version of the TV box now goes for $99 (US), down significantly from the original $229 (US) selling price.

Apple TV will cost $119 in Canada and online preorders are already being taken.

Netflix films will also be available on the device, set to be released next month.

Amazon.com also made an announcement Wednesday, revealing it would begin selling ABC, FOX and BBC TV shows for 99 cents to own. The content can be viewed on PCs and devices that have Amazon’s Video on Demand service.

Apple also unveiled a new generation of its iconic iPod, including a touch-screen Nano, a smaller Shuffle and an iPod Touch with face time and retina display.

A new Shuffle will sell for $59 in Canada, the Nano will go for $150. The new iPhone Touch will range from $249 for the 8GB to $429 for the 64GB.
