Portugal picks Lisbon to host 2018 Eurovision Song Contest

By The Associated Press

LISBON, Portugal – Organizers say next year’s Eurovision Song Contest will take place in Lisbon, the capital of Portugal.

Portugal will be hosting the annual event for the first time after Salvador Sobral, the singer representing the country this year, won the 2017 contest.

Sobral clinched Portugal’s maiden victory with a gentle, soulful ballad and a subdued, no-frills performance that broke with the contest’s tradition of glitter and gaudiness.

Portuguese public television Radiotelevisao Portuguesa, the host broadcaster, announced Tuesday that the 2018 edition will take place at a riverside entertainment complex in Lisbon.

The semifinals will be held on May 8 and 10, with the final taking place on May 12.
