Salvation Army offers Christmas tradition

TORONTO, Ont. – A Christmas tradition continues Tuesday at the Bloor Central Church.

The Salvation Army will serve as many as 1,300 Christmas meals.

“It’s a joyous atmosphere, it really is,” Salvation Army Major, John Murray told 680News.

A wide variety of people joined the annual festivities Tuesday.

“A collection of community people from the area; we think of the working poor and new Canadians. Perhaps people who are lonely are encouraged to attend the Christmas dinner,” according to Murray.

“I was down there myself earlier today and there was Christmas carols. The volunteers are very festive in their red colours and their Santa hats. And there is just a spirit of jubilation and spirit of community,” said Murray of the event.

The Salvation Army served over 1,300 meals during last year’s Christmas dinner.

“It’s really just the celebration of Christmas and that’s what the Salvation Army is. We’re a community organization and its a joy to be able to share Christmas Day with people this way,” Murray explained.

People attend the festive dinner and celebrate and enjoy the Christmas season together.

“That’s what it’s all about,” Murray noted.
