One dead, one arrested on impaired after fatal Mississauga crash

TORONTO, Ont. – A man is dead and a person is in custody following a two-vehicle collision in Mississauga.

It happened around 7:15 p.m. Saturday at Eastgate Parkway and Cawthra Road.

Const. Thomas Ruttan told CityNews a van and a silver Kia collided at the intersection.

The passenger in the Kia was pronounced dead at the scene.

The Kia’s driver was transported to hospital. There has been no word on her condition.

Const. Ruttan said the driver of the van attempted to flee the scene but was arrested near by after fleeing the scene on foot.

“He was apprehended by a member of the public and held until police arrived,” Ruttan said.

The driver has been charged with failing to remain at the scene of a crash as well as impaired driving causing death.

Police say right now it is too soon to determine just what caused the crash.

“The specifics of the collision, at this point, are still under investigation. Our collision bureau is on scene and they will be reconstructing the scene to determine what has taken place,” Ruttan explained.

The intersection was expected to be closed for several hours.
