WikiLeaks film to open TIFF

Bill Condon’s thriller “The Fifth Estate” about controversial Wikileaks founder Julian Assange will kick off the star-studded festival on September 5.

British actor Benedict Cumberbatch stars and artistic director Cameron Bailey told 680News it reflects the age in which we live.

“Now that we’re all online, all of our information is out there, governments are collecting information, companies are collecting information… what does it all mean?,” Cumberbatch asked. “I think this movie allows to think through that and understand that in a better way.”

Also announced was “Mandela” starring Idris Alba, Jason Reitman’s “Labor Day” starring Kate Winslet, Josh Brolin and Tobey McGuire and celebrated Quebec filmmaker Denis Villeneuve’s hostage drama “Prisoners,” starring Hugh Jackman and Jake Gyllenhaal.

Also screening will be James Gandolfini’s final film “Enough Said.”

The festival runs from September 5 to 15.
