Uber allows riders to see breakdown of average rating

By Julie Arounlasy

Uber has launched a new feature on their app that gives riders access to a breakdown of their average rating.

The exact number of drivers who have given riders five-star ratings or even one-star ratings can be seen using the app’s Privacy Centre.

Both riders and drivers can rate each other from one to five stars on a trip as long as it doesn’t get cancelled. A person’s rating is the average of their last 500 trips.

Uber says drivers have long been expected to meet a minimum rating threshold which can vary city to city.

If a driver’s rating is approaching the minimum limit, Uber will let them know and may give them tips shared by customers to improve their rating.

If the low ratings continue then drivers may lose access to the Uber app, according to company guidelines.

Riders can also lose access to Uber if they develop a significantly below average rating.

Uber says riders have several chances to improve their rating before losing access to the Uber apps.

Riders can also receive tips on how to improve their ratings, such as encouraging polite behavior and avoiding requests for drivers to exceed the speed limit.

According to the transport company, drivers shared some of the top reasons they hand out fewer stars.

Reasons include having had to clean up trash after riders, passengers not wearing their seatbelt, making the driver wait after arriving for pick-up, being treated disrespectfully, and slamming the car door.

Different cities also have different average rider ratings.

Uber released a list of the top five Canadian cities which have the highest average rider rating and the lowest.

The cities with riders who have the highest average ratings include Saskatoon, Sask., Red Deer, Alta., Abbotsford, B.C., Brantford, Ont. and Lethbridge, Alta.

The lowest average ratings can be found in Ontario and Quebec including Ottawa, Toronto, Montreal, London and Hamilton.
