Toronto Pearson International Airport gets $142M from feds for infrastructure

The federal Minister of Transportation says Toronto Pearson International Airport will receive $142m to repair airfields, develop new check-in and boarding systems and support COVID-19 screening.

Toronto Pearson International Airport will be receiving more than $142 million from the federal government for infrastructure-related projects.

Transport Minister and Mississauga Centre MP Omar Alghabra made the announcement at Terminal 1 Monday morning.

He said the money would be used to rehabilitate several areas of the airfield, install new check-in and border clearance systems, and to support COVID-19 testing and screening of passengers and employees.

Alghabra also said some of the funding would be used to conduct technical studies for a terminal building for the future extension of the Eglinton Crosstown LRT to Toronto Pearson International Airport from Mount Dennis station. The Ontario government’s extension project is set to finish in 2030 or 2031 while the main Eglinton Crosstown LRT line is set to open by the end of 2022.

During Monday’s announcement, Greater Toronto Airports Authority President and CEO Deborah Flint called the funding “mission critical” for restoring connectivity at the airport amid the recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic.
