2nd suspect in shooting death of B.C. man in Stoney Creek returned to Canada

A second suspect wanted in the murder of a 39-year-old man from British Columbia in the Hamilton area last year has been returned to Canada.

Hamilton police say 28-year-old Oliver Karafa was extradited from Hungary back to Ontario on Wednesday to face first-degree murder and attempted murder charges.

Karafa and 25-year-old Yun (Lucy) Lu Li were identified as suspects in the February 2021 shooting death of B.C. resident Tyler Pratt in Stoney Creek, Ont. A 26-year-old woman was hospitalized with serious injuries in the same attack. She continues to recover after extensive treatment in hospital, according to police.

Following the murder, both Karafa and Li fled the country to Europe and were eventually arrested in Hungary in June 2021.

One month after the arrests, Li was returned to Canada but Karafa continued to fight the extradition process for the next eight months.

“Hamilton Police Service recognizes all the efforts of our policing partners domestically and internationally, specifically, the Hungarian Fugitive Active Search Team (FAST), for the collective efforts that resulted in the arrest of these wanted individuals,” police said in a statement.

Karafa is expected to appear in court on Thursday.
