A 30-year-old man has died after a head-on crash on the 410 in Brampton. Police say he was driving in the wrong direction at the time of the collision. Carl Hanstke with the latest.

A deadly crash involving a wrong-way driver shut down a stretch of Highway 410 in Brampton for several hours during the Wednesday morning rush.

The two-vehicle collision occurred in the southbound lanes of the highway south of Steeles Avenue around 3:30 a.m.

Police say a car was travelling northbound in the southbound lanes when it collided head-on with a transport truck.

The driver of the car, a 30-year-old man from Oakville, was pronounced dead at the scene.

OPP Sgt. Kerry Schmidt says officers were notified of a vehicle travelling in the wrong direction on the highway but were initially unable to locate it. Police were notified of the collision a short time later.

“We also have reports that this vehicle was travelling southbound in the northbound lanes earlier in the night,” says Schmidt.

The southbound 410 was closed from Steeles to Highway 407 during the morning rush. The lanes have since reopened.
