The body of OPP Sgt. Eric Mueller was returned to a funeral home in Rockland, Ont., on Saturday ahead of a police funeral next week.
A procession of police cars and motorcycles escorted Mueller’s body from the Ottawa Hospital as members of the public, along with first responders and fellow police officers, paid their respects from the many overpasses along the highway or standing outside their homes.
A police funeral will be held at the Canadian Tire Centre in Kanata, Ont., on Thursday, May 18. Details are still being finalized
Sgt. Mueller died in hospital following the early Thursday shooting at a home in Bourget, Ont. The 42-year-old and two other officers had been responding to a disturbance call, police said.
Police allege Sgt. Mueller and two other officers who were shot on Thursday were “ambushed” when they arrived at a local home.
The officers had called for backup before they approached, police said. One injured officer was still in the hospital in stable condition on Thursday, while the other had been released.
Police did not provide an update on the officer’s state in hospital on Friday.
Alain Bellefeuille, a 39-year-old Bourget resident, is charged with one count of first-degree murder and two counts of attempted murder in the case.
