York Regional Police are reminding motorists that Highway 407 has rules after one driver was charged for going 180 km/h and dangerously weaving through traffic.
The dashcam video from a police cruiser starts with the officer travelling on Hwy. 407 near Bathurst just before 12:30 p.m. on March 4, 2024. The driver of a white BMW is then shown speeding past.
The officer then pulls the driver over.
“You’re going 180 km/h in a 100 km/h zone. You’re going 80 km/h over, which is considered stunt driving,” said the police constable. “You’re also passing on the inside. I don’t know why you decided to go that fast.”
Much to the driver’s dismay, a transport truck is shown driving by and honking its horn twice.
“All these people are honking at me because they can see how you were driving,” the officer says. “The problem is this is an arrestable offence. I won’t arrest you, OK? But what happens is your licence gets suspended, and your car gets impounded for 14 days.
“For a G2 driver, what you did was really dangerous, blowing by me and in and out of traffic,” the officer continues. “I can’t make you walk from here. I have seen things like this… Do you know when you went in and cut one of the cars off? It’s so close that if he ticks you, you’re rolling all the way down; you’re going that fast.”
The dashcam footage ends by showing the officer explaining to the driver that he hopes it’s the last time they decide to drive that fast.
In a post shared on X, formerly known as Twitter, a York Regional Police spokesperson wrote, “This G2 driver’s bill after stunt driving will be a lot more expensive than the tolls to use this highway.”
York Regional Police said just over 1,100 stunt driving charges were laid in 2023.
