Sacred Vessels Stolen From Church

Durham police are investigating after five sacred altar vessels were stolen from an Anglican church in Newcastle, about 80 kilometres east of Toronto.

On Tuesday afternoon, a maintenance worker clearing snow at St. George’s Anglican Church noticed the main doors ajar. Staff soon realized three sterling-silver chalices and two small plates had gone missing from one of their offices.

Detectives believe the thieves forced their way into the building sometime between Sunday at 2pm and Tuesday at noon. They would like to speak with anyone who sees the items for sale in the Internet or who suspects someone is trying to sell the metal.

The pieces are engraved with markers indicating they are property of the church.

If you can help, call police at 1-888-579-1520 ext. 1606 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477), or go to www.durhamregionalcrimestoppers.ca. Tipsters may be eligible for a reward of up to $2,000.
