A stretch of Highway 401 near Islington Ave. reopened just before rush hour Tuesday morning after officials had to close it a day earlier.
The reason for the shutdown is believed to be the blistering heat, which apparently caused part of the westbound lanes to buckle. The damage started to become noticeable at about 11am Monday when the sticky heat seemingly caused the concrete to expand. Traffic tie-ups followed, as vehicles were forced to use fewer lanes.
Temperatures stretched into the 30s across the GTA at the start of the week, although the humidity made it feel more like 45.
Road crews got to work on the problem shortly thereafter and the road was reopened at about 6:30am Tuesday.
And though the traffic forecast for Tuesday looks better, the weather forecast looks to bring more of the same. It’s looking to be 30C again with humid conditions making it feel 10 degrees warmer, and possible rainfall in the afternoon.
