Montreal homicide detectives are continuing their investigation into the slaying of a prominent member of Canada’s most powerful Mafia clan.
Nick Rizzuto, the eldest son of Vito Rizzuto, was gunned down on Monday in a gritty west-end neighbourhood. Vito Rizzuto, the reputed head of the Montreal Mafia, is serving a sentence in the United States for racketeering related to three Mafia murders.
A spokeswoman with the U.S. Federal Bureau of Prisons says Rizzuto could ask to attend his son’s funeral.
Spokeswoman Felicia Ponce says the warden at the Colorado facility where he’s housed would have to authorize the request and Rizzuto would have to foot the travel and security costs.
She says such requests are confidential.
Montreal police are offering little new information into the shooting death.
Experts say the slaying sends a strong message to Montreal’s Italian Mafia and is likely to be met with reprisals.
