Jewelry goes missing during highrise fire evacuation, couple says

TORONTO, On. – A couple forced out of their apartment in the Wellesley highrise fire said they’ve lost almost $15,000 in jewelry and cash.

Masoud Jamil and Salma Sultana claimed dozens of gold bangles, rings, necklaces and earrings disappeared from their apartment following the fire, CBC reported.

Sultana begged Toronto Community Housing to allow her back into the apartment to pick up the valuables, but they refused her, she said.

The housing agency assured them their belongings would be safe, the couple said.

1,200 people were forced from the building at 200 Wellesley St. E. for weeks, when a fire caused serious damage in late September.

Some of the residents on the lower floors have returned to their homes; however, more than 210 units on the higher floors will not be able to move back 2011.
