VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – The NDP is skeptical of a mobile app being planned for the province’s gambling website. But the BC Lottery Corporation says it’s simply an expansion of PlayNow.com.
With 3,000 people a day logging on to the site, BCLC CEO Michael Graydon says users want more access on the go, adding age verification is not a concern. “Because it is utilizing PlayNow.com, you have to have an account which has been third-party verified in regards to your age and residency.”
What if someone steals your smartphone?
“You still have to have all the passwords to be able to access PlayNow.com,” he explains. “So, nothing really is going to reside within that phone; it’s just a device to connect to PlayNow.com and all of the security components within that.”
Meanwhile, gaming critic Shane Simpson is worried young people will be encouraged to log on. “They live on their iPhones… The second thing is that we know there has been security issues surrounding the site. We knew that on day one when it crashed.”
“Their ability to go online… that’s what they do everyday; that’s part of their culture,” he adds.
“This does encourage young people in that way, and I haven’t seen the best practices arguments from BCLC or from the minister and the Liberals that they’re acknowledging that.”
